It’s difficult, if not impossible, to confidently say how inflation will affect cryptocurrency. This is because cryptocurrency as an asset has only existed for a little over 10 years. During most of that time, major economies experienced little significant inflation. As a result, the inflationary pressure of 2021/2022 is the first time that investors have traded cryptocurrency during an era of significant consumer price hikes. While I will share a little, you may want to consider talking to a financial advisor who is experienced in cryptocurrency investments to help you decide how to respond during inflation spikes.

Crypto is not and never has been a functioning currency all over the world. The IRS and SEC do not recognize cryptocurrency assets as cash holdings. Instead, the SEC has determined that crypto assets fall into two investment classes:

1. Commodities
Assets like Bitcoin, which have a pre-determined quantity and nature, are considered commodities in the same vein as gold and silver. While digital assets instead of physical, they otherwise operate on basically the same principles.

There is an amount of Bitcoin that can exist, and which is determined by the asset’s algorithm, just like there’s an amount of gold that can exist which is determined by what’s down in the ground. Bitcoins don’t have an underlying enterprise that would change the nature of the asset. Like gold, silver, iron and lumber, a Bitcoin simply is what it is and investors can buy, own and sell it as the market will bear.

2. Securities
Assets like a utility token or a stablecoin, which can be generated as the underlying project sees fit, are considered securities like a stock or bond. While not traditional assets, tokens operate on the same basic principles as any other securitized asset.

An underlying enterprise creates a group of tokens and sells them on the open market. They can create new tokens or eliminate existing ones at will, and the nature of that token is defined by the nature of the underlying project. A utility token will gain or lose value based on business decisions made by the project that issued it, in a manner almost exactly like a share of stock.

Whether any given cryptocurrency is a commodity or a security, it is not a currency. This means that it will not behave like a currency. Instead, during an inflationary period, investors should expect a cryptocurrency to follow the rules of a high-risk investment class.

Here's a breakdown of the recent developments in the SEC stepping up its enforcement over cases involving stance on cryptocurrencies:

Investor Protection

Fraud prevention: Cryptocurrency markets are still relatively new and have been associated with many frauds and scams. SEC enforcement could deter fraud and protect investors from bad actors.

Disclosure standards: By regulating crypto markets under securities laws, the SEC is hoping to make these enterprises provide more accurate and thorough information to the public, enabling investors to make more informed decisions.

Market Integrity

Price manipulation: The anonymity and lack of regulation in cryptocurrency markets make them susceptible to manipulative practices. SEC oversight could help curb such practices to secure fair prices.

Market surveillance: Monitoring the crypto markets for unusual activities could help maintain market integrity and investor trust.

Legitimacy and Adoption

Legal framework: Falling under the SEC's regulations could legitimize cryptocurrency enterprises and attract more traditional investors and institutions, potentially leading to broader adoption.

Innovation and competition: By creating a level playing field, SEC enforcement could encourage innovation and competition, which are essential for the crypto sector's long-term sustainability and growth.

Money laundering and terrorism financing: By enforcing anti-money laundering (AML) and counterterrorism financing (CTF) regulations, the SEC and other agencies could address two major public concerns about cryptocurrencies.

Regulatory Clarity

Defining boundaries: The SEC's involvement could help determine the boundaries between traditional securities and crypto assets, providing much-needed clarity for entrepreneurs and investors.

Compliance standards: Establishing compliance standards can help crypto enterprises follow widely known regulations and cut legal uncertainties.

Cross-border collaboration: Cryptocurrencies are without borders, so international cooperation and enforcement could help address challenge

In March 2020, the global COVID-19 pandemic triggered a major stock market crash. This widespread economic uncertainty caused a wave of risk aversion across various asset classes, including cryptocurrencies.

The crypto market experienced a sharp decline in price. Therefore, the crash in the stock market has a great effect on cryptocurrencies.

A hard fork is a significant change to a blockchain's programming that creates a new blockchain and cryptocurrency, and it can affect a blockchain and its users in several ways:

Creates a split: A hard fork splits the blockchain into two branches, one that follows the old protocol and one that follows the new version.

Requires users to upgrade: Users who want to remain on the new chain must upgrade to the latest software version.

Users must choose a chain: Users and miners must decide which chain to support.

Can create a new cryptocurrency: The new blockchain may become popular and become a separate cryptocurrency with its own value and community.

Can introduce new features: Hard forks can introduce new functionality, such as correcting security risks or enhancing performance.

Can cause temporary instability: Hard forks can lead to temporary instability, but users often receive an equivalent amount of the new currency.

Can cause confusion: Old forks can remain and cause users to get confused about which version to use.

Can be a voting mechanism: In some cases, hard forks are used as a voting mechanism, where the changes are uploaded by a majority of the nodes.

Note that hard forks can be initiated by developers or by community members. They can be caused by a number of reasons, including developer disagreements, required updates, or someone attempting to create another blockchain.
